Tracey Downing
Biography / Artist statement
Tracey Elizabeth Downing is a painter who writes poems, or 'moems' as she likes to call them, and has written and illustrated her first book 'Moems in Mind' during lockdown, a response which has resonated with others.
Tracey is primarily a painter and has a studio at Wimbledon Art Studios. Her painting 'Bathe' has been selected and features on the front cover of the summer 2020 edition of The British Association of Art Therapist's Bulletin online magazine.
Tracey is a qualified Art Psychotherapist and her training informs her own painting practice and her understanding of the images that emerge. Her work sits between representation and abstraction and has been described as having a narrative quality.
Tracey mostly paints in oils on canvas but has also engaged in drawing, printmaking and clay. Tracey is interested in the meaning that objects hold and paints intuitively in response to memories, thoughts and 'noticings' that she records photographically whenever something catches her interest.
Tracey likes to consider her images as 'small thoughts that travel far'. Tracey is also a keen outdoor swimmer and this helps her deal with a chronic pain condition. Lakes or outdoor pools preferably unheated!
