Biography / Artist statement

Matt Monsey is a painter living and working in Wandsworth. Painting is a mystery – Matt loves the way that things just happen that you would never expect and then running with them. The paintings evolve as he works, the editing and adding starts to happen and even when he has a quite clear idea about what he wants to do a lot of changes seem to happen.

He's a big fan of folk-art, cartoons, cave painting and graffiti. Scale and time interest him too: the past and the future, the monumental and the microscopic. His work is about popular culture and the world we live in today.

In the past three or four years he has had a spirt of creativity. He is incredibly happy about his recent work and cannot wait to get back in the studio and start some new work. Creativity is like a game: it is the ability to play we need to keep that ability to play.

Why do you love Wandsworth?

The river, the transport links, and the green spaces.
