Biography / Artist statement

Louis is an autistic artist who also suffers from fibromyalgia, a chronic pain condition which means he is house bound. This personal history is central to his artistic identity, as over the years making art has been Louis’s way of coping with pain and finding meaningful ways of interacting with the world. Louis works across drawing, sculpture, writing and games design.

Louis has a longstanding practice of creating graphic drawings on his computer. These are largely figurative and often contain weird and wonderful creatures. His work is influenced by a huge range of imagery from across history and culture, including medieval demon illustrations, indie computer games, and artistic figures ranging from Zdzisław Beksiński to the contemporary artist Izumi Kato.

Louis says of his style, “I like mixing creepy with cute… somehow it makes bad things less scary in my mind. The idea that a really horrific monster could be a nice person, and looks kind of sweet, shows that it's not all bad.” Louis translates the difficulties of life into art, always with a light touch and sense of humour.
