Biography / Artist statement

Mr. Edward Hongyi Jia is a passionate artist who graduated from Chelsea College of Arts UAL, London. His work aims to build a relationship between social phenomenons, urban landscapes and his early life experiences. In doing this he hopes to produce narrative paintings that include sci-fi references, historical events and industrial elements. In creating his paintings, he uses a range of references including surrealism and expressionism, in combination with his own judgment and imagination to create a reimagined space. He aims in this space to allow the viewer to think about the way in which our society is developing and a possible future reality: a reality concerned with dynamics of society interaction, religion and politics.

He finds when he paints and creates he must focus and centre his thoughts to achieve an inner peace like that of Daoism, committing fully to creation. He finds seeking this peace in creation to be a personal journey that manifests itsself in the work. His paintings and process embody this journey.

Edward Hongyi Jia would like to depict grand historical themes. Through the history of the past and the things that are happening in the present today, the use of sci-fi elements as a medium is combined with personal associations to try to create a contradiction that combines the past, the present and the future. He is more interested in history, weapon technology and equipment competitions, wars, science fiction and epic grand narratives, and a community of shared future for mankind. As for personal sorrows, joys and sorrows, they are so small that they are not worth mentioning in the grand history. Those mechanical monsters that maybe only human civilisation can build, also symbolise the price, sacrifice and helplessness brought to the entire nation due to political and ideological struggle in the grand historical process.
