Biography / Artist statement

Sue Gunn is a ceramic artist working in Southfields. Her background is in the fashion industry. After gaining a Diploma in Art and Design at Putney School of Art, she graduated from Morley College London, HND Ceramics in 2020.

I am a hand builder, working primarily in porcelain paper clay. I am intrigued by the visual similarity between the body’s internal mechanisms and the flow systems found in the natural world. Endeavouring to capture the vulnerability and impermanence of both, I explore how action or its lack can result in erosion and degeneration. My fragile, sculptures warp and collapse when high fired, reorganising into precariously balanced, forms that I hope will elicit an emotional response and become a starting point for dialogue.

Why do you love Wandsworth?

We are so lucky in Southfields to be near the green spaces of Wimbledon Common and local parks and yet benefit from great transport links to the centre of London. We have great schools, fantastic independent restaurants and shops on our doorstep and a friendly, active, inclusive local community.
