Poppy Cauchi
Biography / Artist statement
Hi, I'm Poppy Cauchi. I've spent the last three years in prop making at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama and am about to begin MA in Sculpture at RCA. My artist journey began with the idea of making a silk purse out of a sow's ear, finding joy in transforming uncomfortable or broken things into something beautiful or valuable. My sculptures act as sculptural 'Trojan horses’, hiding secret meanings and using puns or literary connotations to evoke reactions from viewers. Described as ‘disturbing’, ‘flesh-like,’ and ‘detailed’, my work uses realism and uncanny alterations, drawing on my prop-making skills. While my work delves into themes of PTSD, deception, and trauma, it also embraces childhood innocence and a playful side of art. Moving forward, I am inspired by Greek mythology and aim to give a visual to unspoken words. I like to think of my sculptures as time-traveling storytellers, weaving personal struggles into contemporary conversations about life, emotions, and human trauma.
