Biography / Artist statement
Paulie X is a London-based, self-taught artist specialising in the study of human emotion in portraiture, abstract expressionism and symbolism. He is a highly talented Nigerian-born British artist and has been making art since he was about six years old. He took a long 14-year break from art at the age of 13 and eventually came back to art after studying aerospace engineering. He is a self-described polymath. Since his artistic rejuvenation he has been (and still is) particularly fascinated by the power and inscrutability of human inexpression. He paints captivating portraits of people, and carefully selects subjects that leave the interpretation of the thoughts, state of mind, and expression of the subjects open to the interpretation of the observer. He is also very highly expressive in his more modern impasto, abstract styles infusing some elements of some of his idols, Van Gogh, Pollock and Basquait into his art styles. He paints in several media and has done a lot of art in digital media, as well as painting in more traditional mixed media – charcoal, graphite, ink and acrylic paints in a wide-ranging and varied set of expressive styles and is also heavily influenced by renaissance masters like Artemisia, Rubens, Caravaggio and Da Vinci.. Artist quote: "I'm excited to show you the beauty I see! • Art isn't what you see; Art is what you make others see!"
