Biography / Artist statement

After completing her undergraduate degree at Wimbledon College of Art, Lizzie Pike has continued to live in South London.

Lizzie’s paintings, and more recently rugs, draw from her everyday life. Her work is inspired by everyday items, painted from life and collages; they evolve to include patterns and motions, captivating social issues and her own internal struggle. The work, drawn from her surroundings, undergo an awakening as the paint and fibres create movement and a language of its own. At first, afraid of the permanency of the medium, Lizzie’s exploration generates layers of imagery and texture. As the work evolves, Lizzie realises that the works would not be appropriate without the mistakes made along the way. She remarks “I always struggle with an inner saboteur, questioning my ability and tries to eat away at my confidence, especially when I feel I make mistakes in my work, but driving through this makes me realise these are not errors.” This process forges conversations between each work, the artist and the subject and prevents internal worries of writer's block.
