Biography / Artist statement

Jane Wachman is full time artist and has had a studio for the past ten years at Wimbledon Art Studios. She is a contemporary painter; her paintings are very gestural, exude energy and movement and are often on a large scale. She works with galleries, interior designers and undertakes commissions.

Her paintings are inspired by travel; she pulls together memories of the places she has travelled to through mark making. Influences as far as India and Morocco sit alongside more familiar places such as the Sussex Downs and the Irish coastline.

Colour is integral to her work. Prior to becoming an artist she worked in the fashion industry surrounded by beautiful fabrics and textures. This has been a big influence on her practice. She uses a cocktail of bright and vibrant colours with dashes of fluorescent pinks, oranges and yellows. She lets the colours and layers mix themselves on the canvas. For her, the act of painting is a continuous process always changing, always taking away to create something new.

Her latest paintings brings together all that she loves, from the wild colours of India and Morocco to the costal hues of West Sussex and the Downs. Her paintings are intuitive: the colours are an extension of her personality coming through. She references the ever-changing outlines of the landscape and identifies with shape, form and structure. She is influenced by all that she encounters, seen through a filter shaped by her love of the new and the different.

  Colour is the essence...
