Biography / Artist statement

Briony Marshall is a Wansworth based sculptor who has always found solace and meaning in science, to quote one of her heroines, Rachel Carson: “Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.” Briony has a mission to bring this beauty and understanding to others through participatory art projects. She is well know for her unique bronze sculptures that represent the chemistry of the world around and in us. Each atom is represented by a human figure what reaches out its arms and legs to form them bonds that hold them together in unique geometries. Through this she hopes to remind us of how we are all interconnected and how people in societies come together to create beautiful things. In her most recent work, she has turned to natural materials to highlight the impact we are having on our planet. Stunning abstract sculptures are made of rammed earth from her garden with embedded litter she finds on the streets around her. Related to these works, her project Plastic Mountain will involve the community of West Norwood to create a large earth and litter sculpture outside the library. The sculpture will change over a number of months, with the earth washing away and the litter remaining on the ghost of the sculpture. Thus highlighting the problems of plastic and man-made materials. Briony is a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors, she is a department head at the Art Academy London and her work Layers of Bournemouth was shortlisted for the Marsh award for excellence in Public Sculpture.
