Stella Tooth (Resident Artist at Half Moon Putney)
Performers inspire me, both on the street and in venues, and through them I explore themes of separation and connection, seeking to blur the boundaries between illustration and fine art.
I’m Resident Artist at The Half Moon Putney, and am proud to be part of the revival of one of the capital’s longest running and world-renowned live music venues, synonymous with The Rolling Stones, where, since the early 1960s, some of the biggest names in popular music have performed. I find myself in very good company as music residencies have included Elvis Costello and Steve Marriott of the Small Faces. Artist residencies allow individuals to explore their practice within another community.
As a trained portrait artist and drawing tutor at the National Portrait Gallery, V&A, Tate Britain and The Courtauld for Sketchout, I seek to capture the creative energy of many of the Half Moon’s best loved acts — from regulars like Bob Kerr's Whoopee Band, Hank Wangford and Dr Feelgood to tribute bands such as the Rollin' Stoned and Absolute Bowie to relative newcomers like Catfish. And then of course there's the thrill of capturing old hands like Pink Floyd's Nick Mason inaugurate his new supergroup, the Saucerful of Secrets, at the iconic music venue. A percentage of all sales of my art through the venue go to its 2019 charity, Missing People.
The weekend of my free open house at the Half Moon Putney coincides with the ticketed Music Makers Festival run by Albert Man Music, whose ethos is to showcase the talent of independent artists. Outside of the open house period, a changing exhibition of my Half Moon Putney musician work is constantly on show in the gastropub and music venue.
I’m also a founding member of the Lots Road Group of portrait artists who met when studying at Heatherleys, one of the few art colleges in Britain that focus on portraiture and figurative painting, and a member of Putney Artists. Winner of the Judges' Prize at Egypt's first biennale (2013), I’ve exhibited at the Milan Expo, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and National Open Art exhibitions (2015).
